Japanese strategy in globally integrated manufacturing: lessons learned

Abstract: Today, Japanese manufacturing firms are acknowledged technological leaders in many advanced areas. The Japanese government and industries have continually taken the initiatives to initiate new manufacturing strategy. Recently, Japanese industries have changed the traditional "factory integration" philosophy to a "virtual factory" management philosophy. This paper highlights the trends and strategies in the management of globally integrated manufacturing in Japan. First, an overview of strategies for globalisation in Japan will be presented; then, a summary on the principles of Japanese globally integrated manufacturing strategy is given.
