Optimisation of shot peening process for AISI 4140H forged connecting rod using MADM techniques

Abstract:
Shot peening is a process that set up compressive residual stresses on the surface of component and alters its mechanical properties, which depends on proper selection of peening parameters. Manufacturer is always in demand to improve productivity and reduce cost. The attempt of this paper is to optimise shot peening process parameters by various multiple attribute decision making (MADM) techniques such as TOPSIS, GRA, SAW and desirability approach. In the present investigation shot mix, exposure time and shot flow rate are considered as input process parameters whereas surface roughness and compressive residual stresses are considered as response variables. MADM techniques suggest that, shot flow rate of 21 amp and exposure time of 120 sec are optimum setting of peening parameters. The analysis will be useful for process planning to decide the peening parameters for best combination of performance characteristics.
