Abstract:
An academic subject, "Manufacturing Systems Engineering", proposed in 1975, is historically reviewed by defining manufacturing/production systems, and manufacturing systems. The social role and future perspective of manufacturing systems (engineering) are also discussed, stressing "socially appropriate manufacturing" as manufacturing excellence for the 21st century.
