Abstract:
This paper deals with the cell formation problem in which machine cells and part families are identified for a given machine-part incidence matrix. The p-median model is one of the widely used mathematical programming formulations which require a similarity coefficient to be solved. Modifying the similarity measure of Viswanathan, we propose another measure to enhance the performance of the model. The validity of the proposed measure is examined through a comparative study with other existing solution approaches in terms of grouping efficiency.
