Ontology development for knowledge representation

Albert Albers, Hannes Schmalenbach and Quentin Lohmeyer

International Journal of Product Development, 2011, vol. 14, issue 1/2/3/4, 53-71

Abstract: Ontologies represent a promising approach to support cooperative working in product development. In this paper, an enhanced approach for ontology development is presented. Based on existing methodologies, the approach focuses on the comprehensive integration of validation activities into the steps of ontology development processes and presents apt validation methods for each of the steps. The ontology development within the interdisciplinary research project CRC 483 serves as an example for the method application. The decisive first activities of developing an ontology are shown and the results of those activities are explained and discussed by focusing on the aspects of validation.
