Review of critical success factors and frameworks of new product development process

Abstract: Manufacturing companies emphasise New Product Development (NPD) to remain competitive amid technological advancements and global competition. NPD is complex and influenced by technical, marketing, organisational, commercial and social factors that converge to decide success or failure. Researchers have identified the Critical Success Factors (CSFs) and developed various NPD frameworks to address specific needs. CSFs collaboratively mould and reshape the framework for NPD. Thus, it is vital to find the comprehensive set of CSFs and their relationship with the NPD framework. This research conducts a literature review to identify CSFs. The key features of different NPD frameworks are outlined, emphasising the paradigm shift brought about by recent technological advancements. Further, identified CSFs are mapped with the stages of the NPD framework to help integrate, prioritise and leverage the CSFs to enhance the likelihood of achieving NPD goals. The highlighted research opportunities may be pursued to develop the improved framework in a dynamic environment.
