Facilities management service requirements for social housing in the semi-arid climate of Nigeria

Abstract: This paper examines the facilities management service requirements for social housing occupants within the semi-arid climate of Nigeria. Data collection was through self-administered questionnaires sent to 1,032 occupants in five purposely selected social housing estates in Maiduguri, a town in the Semi-arid Climate of Nigeria. The cross-sectional survey achieved a total response rate of 92.5%. The statistical model employed in analysing data was Pearson's chi-square test and relative importance indices using Stata v. 13.0. The findings indicated the most required facilities management services in social housing within the semi-arid climate are maintenance of infrastructural facilities, building structures maintenance, wind-breaking and landscaping services, alteration and improvements maintenance services, provision of housekeeping services and adequate water, electricity supply and green space services in order of importance. The study, therefore, underscores the need for adequate funding and a well-designed FM strategy to guide toward service delivery under the agreed service level.
