Evaluating the impact of product eco-redesign on CLSC performances through a system dynamics approach

Abstract:
This work deals with recovery of end-of-life products through the remanufacturing option. Remanufacturing aims at lengthening products' and/or components' life cycle, reducing waste and the use of natural resources. The design features of a generic product are crucial for its remanufacturability. Moreover a product redesign in a DfE perspective could heavily affect the capacity planning and, therefore, the profitability of a closed loop supply chain. The remanufacturing option has been analysed in a holistic way through a system dynamics approach. A causal loop diagram allows to highlight the relationships between the various interacting parts and/or variables of this process. A system dynamics simulation model allows to evaluate these links over time. An eco-redesign of a product significantly modifies its possibility to be recovered and remanufactured. Therefore, a redesign activity should be properly coordinated within the various actors of a reverse supply chain.
