Study of 5S lean technique: a review paper

Abstract: 5S is a housekeeping technique used by various organisations derived from five Japanese words - Seiri (sort), Seiton (set in order), Seiso (shine), Seiketsu (standardise) and Shitsuke (sustain). This technique improves efficiency, productivity and quality by making the workplace orderly, pleasant and organised. The objective of the paper is to examine the 5S implementation process across all the different manufacturing scenarios and to emphasise the significant positive results of 5S. The paper is based on systematic literature review that monitors the 5S implementation technique in various organisations and categorises the published literature in three distinguished categories based on conciseness and systematic approach to analyse and review the methodology. The paper reviews preponderance of the findings by numerous researchers and highlights the suggestions and improvisations for ensuring efficient and effective 5S implementation in any organisation. The results exhibit the effectiveness of the 5S tool to improve the performance and to aid the organisation to achieve continuous improvement and higher performance.
