Abstract:
In constructing wooden-hulled boats with outrigger, it is imperative to consider design factors that relate to safe operating conditions and sustainability. However, there exists no set of design failure modes in the literature specific to that of wooden-hulled boats with outrigger, thus, making it difficult for stakeholders of the maritime domain to understand fully the risks present in its design and construction. Therefore, this paper applies fuzzy FMEA to assess the risks involved in the design and construction of wooden-hulled boats with outrigger. The proposed methodology is applied in the Philippines, and it is found that high priority should be provided to failure modes pertaining directly to the type of wood used, being the primary component of wooden-hulled boats with outrigger, followed by failure modes specific on the design aspects. With such results, stakeholders are better facilitated on policies to be implemented to achieve an efficiently designed wooden-hulled boat with outrigger.
