Social capital in sustainable cooperative entrepreneurship: an insight at cooperatives in Turkey

Aslı Öztopcu

International Journal of Sustainable Development, 2023, vol. 26, issue 3/4, 356-382

Abstract: The sustainability of an enterprise has implications for both the company and society. The paper discusses the sustainability of cooperative entrepreneurship (CE) among company types using the social capital approach. Although social capital is supportive of social and economic development, the type of company is ignored in studies examining the social capital of enterprises. In the study, studies on cooperatives in Turkey were examined. The findings show that the benefits of social capital increase after the members join the cooperative. Members get benefits such as increased revenue, collaboration in a trusted environment, and increased production volume. These advantages increase the performance of CEs. In other words, there is an affirmative interaction between CE performance and social capital in the sustainability of CEs.
