Public support and preferences for FTA in Thailand

Abstract: As the participation in free trade area (FTA) becomes one of the most widely used trade policy tools, identifying its potential determining factors is a very important step in its implementation. In addition to aspects relating to macroeconomic issues, micro attributes could uncover the reason of people's support and preference for FTA. This study aims to examine whether various micro elements can influence individuals' support for FTA in Thailand. Logit and marginal effect are used for the analysis. The result shows the explanatory power of such factors as national pride, job creation opportunities, and the awareness of the FTA's benefits, in explaining the probability of persons' support and preference for FTA. This knowledge could provide important clue for the authorities involved in administrating the country's trade policy.
