Global railway passenger transports – efficiency analysis from period of 1980-2004

Abstract:
A number of different studies have been completed from the efficiency of developed countries and their passenger transportation operations. However, we have little understanding from the global performance of railway sector, and particularly from passenger segment. In this research work, we use two data envelopment analysis efficiency measurement models to evaluate performance in longitudinal perspective. Findings reveal that Japan is dominating whatever the model being used is, and differences between countries as well as regions are significant. However, generally it could be concluded that on the average passenger operations have shown improvement after year 1990, this concerns particularly passenger-kms DEA model.
