Farmer producer organisations for sustainable development of tribal communities

Abstract: In the present context, agriculture has lost relevance for small and marginal farmers. The case is even worse for marginal communities like tribals. Producer Organisations are considered a solution for transforming the lives of farmers, reducing transactional costs, providing better collective marketing platforms, creating employment opportunities, improving income generation and capacitating human resource in terms of market competitiveness. This paper explores the potential of Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) as a communitarian institution in the context of tribals of Nandurbar district through the study of Yaha Aadivasi Navapur Farmer Producer Company Ltd., Nesu Parisar Farmer Producer Company Ltd. and Bahugunit Farmer Producer Company Ltd., Nandurbar and evaluates these community-based organisations on the parameters of Financial Services, Input Supply, Procurement % Packaging, Marketing, Insurance Services, Technical Services, Convenience and Consultancy Services.
