Political economy of agricultural development and disparity in India

Abstract: Despite an impressive growth of the agriculture sector in India, the sector has always been a very unequal affair. The green revolution in India left India with uneven effects of growth on products, regions and classes of people. With this concern about increasing inequality, the spatial dimensions of inequality have begun to attract considerable policy interest. However, there is remarkably little systematic documentation of the facts of what has happened to Indian agriculture with respect to spatial and regional inequality over the past three decades. This paper in this regard, is an attempt to focus the extent of disparity that exists in the agricultural sector among the 15 major states of India and to identify major factors in explaining this disparity. On the basis of data collected from various secondary sources for the period 1981-2015, the paper presents strong evidence of inequality in agricultural income across states of India.
