Factors influencing the start-up intentions of urban women in India: a theory of planned behaviour based approach

Abstract: The growth in number of women led businesses is essential for sustaining the gender equality, justice, and balance around the globe, and specifically in developing countries. Role of female entrepreneurs is vital in innovation based ventures and entrepreneurship for social, cultural, and economic development of a country like India. This study aims to ascertain the factors influencing the start-up intentions of urban women in India. A conceptual framework is proposed through rigorous literature review and based on theory of planned behaviour. The empirical testing of the proposed model is carried out using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and structural equation modelling (SEM). The results reveal that attitude of a person, personality traits, and awareness about ecosystem affect the start-up intentions of a person. Whereas subjective norm and perceived behaviour control do not impact. Parent's business background plays a mediating role in subjective norms and start-up intentions. The conclusion is presented and the future directions for further research are provided at the end.
