Abstract: In this paper I analyze, simultaneously, the labor force participation and fertility decisions taken by the Spanish women. I use a switching probit model with endogenous switching to estimate the causal effect of participation on fertility. I offer an estimate of the effect of participation on the probability of having a first, second or third child that does not reflect variation in unobserved differences between participating and non participating women. Our estimations show the incompatibility between participation and childbearing. Also, we show that the effect of explanatory variables on fertility decisions depends on the woman’s labor state and the number of children already born. (Copyright: Fundación Empresa Pública)
