Abstract: This paper presents a model in which the work schedule results from the equilibrium between the firm’s decision and workers’ preferences. A technology which organises the inputs in shifts has been considered for this objective, and the workers’ preferences are defined over the different feasible work-days. In this context, the treatment given to the concepts of shiftwork and workday are key innovations. The existence or not of capital constraints, the "fatigue" effect, and the preferences regarding leisure determine the amount of inputs utilized as well as the timing of work.
