BRICS Economic Situation and Outlook

Conjunctura economiei mondiale / World Economic Studies, 2012
Abstract:
The paper highlights the BRICS countries' economic situation in 2010 and prospects for 2011-2012, based on a comparative analysis of key macroeconomic indicators. The economic slowdown is explained in all analyzed economies by both structural and cyclical factors. The article points out that one of the common vulnerabilities of BRICS countries is the high level of inflation, India being the worst affected. In the field of economic policy measures, our research reveals a series of protectionist measures adopted not necessarily in response to the financial and economic crisis, but in order to change the structure of industrial production and strengthen national competitive advantages. Among the countries analyzed, only India and China continue to record a robust and sustained economic growth, although structural weaknesses may hinder this growth.
