Abstract:
The UK economy recorded a more modest growth in 2016 in comparison to the previous year, due to shrinking internal demand and a noteworthy depreciation of the pound sterling. Unemployment rate has been kept under the EU average and the budgetary deficit has continued its downward trend. Official projections for 2017-2018 are influenced by uncertainty about how the UK will negotiate exit conditions and accept a set of conditions imposed by the EU, in the context of rising inflationary pressures, declining purchasing power and weaker confidence in growth. There are a number of different Brexit scenarios to consider for the future EU-27 relations with the UK, ranging from comfortable and lax ones to a hostile and tensioned variant between the two sides.
