The dynamics of the US dollar in 2016 and outlook for 2017

Andrei Radulescu

Conjunctura economiei mondiale / World Economic Studies, 2017, 229-232

Abstract: The US dollar appreciated for the fifth year in a row in 2016, an evolution determined by the consolidation of the post-crisis cycle and the gradual convergence of the inflation towards FED target in US. At the same time, the upward trend for the US dollar was supported in 2016 by the intensification of the monetary policy divergence (FED vs. ECB). For 2017 we expect the dynamics of the US dollar to be influenced by opposite forces, with the end of the monetary policy divergence (ECB vs. FED) in sight contributing to the inflexion (change of trend, from upward to downward).
