EU AS A GLOBAL PLAYER IN THE CURRENT GEO-POLITICAL FRAMEWORK

Andreea – Emanuela Drăgoi

Euroinfo, 2017, vol. 1, issue 11-12, 3-12

Abstract: Currently, the European Union finds itself at the crossroads of an international geo-political environment marked by a series of tensions and challenges (the cooling effect in relations with the Russian Federation following the annexation of the Crimea, the Brexit effect and its possible implications for the transatlantic partnership, the migration crisis, and the recrudescence of terrorism in the European territory). Against this background, there is a clear need for EU to rethink its instruments and lines of action in the field of security and foreign relations. As a result, this paper aims to analyse the possible EU strategic approaches in the field of foreign policy but also regarding the Eastern Partnership, given the need for EU to find the most appropriate solutions for the present challenges and to become not only a global actor, but also an equilibrium pole at international level. Our research is based on both most relevant EU strategic documents and on the cooperation framework (in the Eastern Partnership) with the ex-soviet countries. In the conclusions of our analysis, we intend to highlight some aspects concerning the future of this partnership, but also of the EU's relationship with the Russian Federation.
