DIGITAL SINGLE MARKET – A EU PRIORITY

Abstract:
The digital economy is one of the European Union's economic development policies,the second in terms of importance after job creation, growth and investment. This paper provides an insight into the European Union's policy for the development of the digital economy, with reference to the digital single market and the conditions for its realization in the European Union. The article also presents the instrument used by the European Commission to measure the progress of the digital economy, namely the index of the digital economy and society (DESI) in the European Union and presents a comparative analysis of the member states from the perspective of their digital performance in 2016.
