BREXIT PERSPECTIVES AFTER THE REJECTION OF THE BILATERAL AGREEEMENT BY THE BRITISH PARLIAMENT. OPINIONS

Petre Prisecaru

Euroinfo, 2019, vol. 3, issue 2, 3-25

Abstract: There is a wide range of views on the Brexit situation expressed by some eminent and competent political analysts who showed the difficulty of the process of UK's exit from the EU. The implementation transposing the result of 2016 Referendum proved to be a difficult task in the context in which the burden of negotiations under Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty was left only on the shoulders of Theresa May Cabinet while the House of Commons was not involved, but declaring itself being dissatisfied afterwards with the outcome achieved by the government. Theresa May seemed obsessed with leaving the EU and she ignored particularly the negative consequences of the exit. Amid divisions within the Conservative Party and the Labour Party has become virtually impossible to shape a majority for accepting the Withdrawal Agreement and the Political Statement, both having reasonable terms and conditions. Starting with January 29th is emerging more and more the catastrophic variant of exit with no deal, especially since the EU was not willing to renegotiate and to offer any further concessions.
