Petre Prisecaru

Euroinfo, 2019, vol. 3, issue 3, 37-49

Abstract: On March 12 the House of Commons rejected second time the withdrawal agreement negotiated with the EU, and on March 14 voted for delaying the withdrawal from the EU, but the British Parliament failed to take control over Brexit from the prime minister, rejecting the amendment for a second referendum. On March 20, Theresa May gave a speech in Downing Street in which she blamed the Parliament for failing to find a solution and she will not be able to meet the deadline of March 29. On March 21, the European Council agreed to an extension until May 22, 2019 provided that the agreement is approved and another extension until April 12 to find a solution, but reiterates that it is not possible any renegotiation of the agreement with the EU. On March 25 the British Parliament took control of the process, then Theresa May promised to Conservative MPs to resign in exchange for the adoption of agreement and on March 27 the eight options proposed in Parliament were all rejected, uncertainty about a quick solution still persists. On March 29 the third attempt to pass the agreement through House of Commons failed.
