Abstract:
This article has three major objectives: (1) Highlighting the motivations for an EU-ASEAN strategic partnership; (2) Identification of the causes for which a bi-regional strategic partnership has not been adopted so far; (3) Synthesizing possible joint actions to stimulate EU cooperation with ASEAN. A bi-regional strategic partnership is justified by a multitude of arguments, starting from the favorable economic situation of the ASEAN countries and the advantages of increasing access to this market, to the mutual benefits obtained from exercising the EU's capacity to contribute to the implementation of ASEAN's objectives, but also to the national plans of economic development of the partner countries. However, as indicated by the current state of trade negotiations, a number of sensitive issues persist, implying the need to change the EU's position in certain areas, so that the high potential of bi-regional cooperation is not wasted.
