Abstract:
After almost 20 years of difficult negotiations, on 28 June 2019 the EU and South American economic bloc Mercosur concluded negotiations on a Trade Agreement, part of a more comprehensive Association Agreement. The new trade framework will consolidate the strategic partnership between the two regions and create one of the world’s largest free trade areas. The new Trade Agreement is an important step for the EU strategy to trade diversification and to enhance its position as a global power, while the advantages for the Mercosur consist in increasing economic competitiveness, export diversification, new opportunities for attracting FDI, fostering the regional integration process and reactivate its external agenda. In this context, this article aims to present the status of the EU-Mercosur relationship, different phases since the creation of the South American economic bloc, negotiation rounds, with a brief review of the new Trade Agreement.
