THE MODERNIZATION OF THE EU AGREEMENTS WITH CHILE AND MEXICO AND THE CONCLUSION OF THE NEGOTIATIONS WITH MERCOSUR. THE CURRENT STATE OF TRADE RELATIONS

Ana Voicu

Euroinfo, 2025, vol. 9, issue 1, 2-21

Abstract: The entry into force of the EU-Chile Interim Trade Agreement, of the conclusion of negotiations on the EU-MERCOSUR Association Agreement and the announcement of conclusion on the political negotiations on the update of the EU-Mexico Global Agreement, documents finalized in less than 18 months in a sensitive geopolitical moment for both regions, will strengthen the political dialogue, economic and trade cooperation, as well as the parties' commitment to free trade in the context of current global tensions. Through these agreements the EU is taking a significant step forward in the current international scenario by increasing its relations and presence in the region, with the EU bloc having trade agreements with the majority of Latin American countries in a context marked by the growth of China's influence and the new trade policy of the Washington administration. This article provides an overview of the context surrounding the conclusion of negotiations on the respective agreements, mutual benefits and opportunities in terms of trade and investment, as well as the current state of trade relations between the EU and the partner countries.
