Abstract:
Merger control – one of the main instruments of EU competition policy – makes an important contribution to the functioning of the Internal market, both by providing a harmonized set of rules for economic concentrations and corporate restructuring and ensuring that competition environment and, finally, consumers in the Member States are not harmed by such transactions in the marketplace. This article presents the objectives of EU merger control policy and its enforcement, and also highlights the important contribution of the European Commission to increasing the effectiveness of the merger control system. Our research emphasizes the main challenges facing this policy in order to meet the strategic objectives of the EU economy in the context of globalisation and deepening Internal Market integration.
