Abstract:
This paper examines the main developments in the international trading system in 2015, andaims to disentangle their significance and consequences through the lens of the global trading systemgoverned by the World Trade Organization (WTO). Its focus is on four issues, namely: (1) the outcomeof the Tenth WTO Ministerial Conference in December 2015 and its relevance for enhancing themultilateral trading system; (2) the speed-up of plurilateral negotiations within and outside the WTO,as an alternative for multilateral trade talks; (3) the increasing tensions among nations in the contextof soaring trade protectionism; and (4) the unabated drive towards concluding new regional tradeagreements (RTAs). The paper concludes that the outlook for multilateral trade liberalization remainsgloomy, with the global trading system becoming less coherent and more uncertain, which bearsheavily upon the prospects of resuming multilateral cooperation among nations in trade matters.
