Abstract:
The paper reveals the recent developments in international trade flows with medical services through the trading modes defined by the GATS and the progress regarding the regulations favourable to the openness of national markets, given that medical services face some of the most severe trade barriers. The analysis undertaken highlights the way in which the international trade in medical services has crossed the COVID-19 pandemic, through the lens of restrictions on the mobility of patients and medical personnel, but also of the intensification of telemedicine. The results of the analysis show that, starting from the premise of the ongoing growth in international demand for health services, the prospects for international trade in medical services will be focused on the intensification of international investment projects and the implementation of digital technologies in medical services, the continuation of reforms of national regulatory frameworks, and also the intensification of cooperation within international agreements to ensure the ways in which trade can contribute to the strengthening of global health security.
