The Special Ferro-alloys Market – a Difficult Global Problem

Cristina Bumbac

Revista de Economie Mondiala / The Journal of Global Economics, 2011, vol. 3, issue 3

Abstract: The special ferro-alloys are the most important ingredients for special alloyed steel. They are much more expensive than basic ferro-alloys and there are fewer producers. The market is volatile most of the time due to the balance offer-demand: some special ferro-alloys are obtained only in a reduced number of countries (for example, China dominates ferrowolfram), while consumption is specific for every economy. The market for special ferro-alloys depends on the offer of specific metals which form the ferro-alloy, the market for special steel and stainless steels and - sometimes - speculative operations. In general, prices are higher in U.S.A. than in Europe. The atypical crisis which started in 2008 and is still affecting all the developed economies had not a significant influence on the special ferro-alloys market, due to their individuality compared with other goods market. The most stable was the market of ferrowolfram, and the most insecure that of ferrovanadium.
