World grain trade

Emilia Balan

Revista de Economie Mondiala / The Journal of Global Economics, 2017, vol. 9, issue 1

Abstract: Grain is part of agricultural commodities and is of utmost importance for world agriculture, since it is the essential element of food and animal feed. Against this background, grain trade among countries of the world is dynamic and represents about 10% of global trade in food products. This article examines global grain trade both in terms of quantitative and qualitative developments, and highlights the most important competitor countries in this sector. It also details the patterns of grain trade for the world's main exporters and importers of such commodities. Two distinct sections of the research relate to the evolution of the primary grain quotations(wheat, corn, barley, rice and sorghum) at the most representative international agricultural commodities markets (Chicago Board of Trade), based on a comprehensive statistical analysis, and the short-term forecasts for global grain trade, respectively.
