Abstract: Artificial intelligence (AI) has become a pervasive part of our everyday lives, notably influencing the academic field as well. The growth of AI research in communication has accelerated significantly in recent decades and is expected to continue expanding with the introduction of more AI tools, such as ChatGPT. This field presents vast opportunities, yet the potential dangers of AI are also evident. This research handbook offers a comprehensive exploration of the relationship between AI and communication from diverse interdisciplinary and global viewpoints. The handbook is organized into five sections. The first section establishes the groundwork for understanding AI and communication by providing conceptual definitions, theoretical frameworks, and analytical advancements. The second section focuses on the media's portrayal and framing of AI, while the third section looks at the public's comprehension of AI. The fourth section investigates how the public interacts with AI, and the fifth section addresses ethical, legal, and policy issues related to AI.
