Small-Scale Renewable Technologies: Development and Prospects

Abstract: This paper will discuss the topic of small-scale Renewable Energy (RE) technologies, their progress and prospects in developing countries. Specifically, five technologies will be given a closer look: tidal array, geothermal, anaerobic digestion, small-scale hydro (micro and mini), and small combined heat and power (CHP). The paper will explain the technologies and the setting in which they can be applied, and look at case studies from developing countries where small-scale RE are making a difference. A particular look at those five small-scale technology has been chosen since some of them are underdeveloped and show promising potential for installations. The paper will conclude by describing the potential development prospects in terms of markets where these technologies could, respectively, expand.
