Abstract:
Socioeconomic factors may influence the epidemiology of viral hepatitis. We present the results of an ongoing prospective study which included a number of 56 patients. Sixty-two percent of them came from urban areas and 50% came from medium income families. Ninety percent of the children were in school and most parents were educated up to secondary school. A significant percentage of families did not have appropriate indoor toilet and plumbing facilities. Systematic prevention methods should be available and the awareness level needs to be raised in order to fight contagion and lower the incidence of chronic viral hepatitis in Romania.
