Abstract: In recent years, government, private business, and individuals have shown an increasing concern about the rate of growth in energy consumption due to inflationary pressures, increasing demands, and diminishing energy sources. This concern has led to a critical analysis of the way in which energy is used by all concerned parties to determine what can and should be done to optimize the use of this limited energy. The water distribution system, among public utility systems, is a large consumer of energy in the form of electricity. With the increasing size and complexity of water distribution systems, the pursuit of energy conservation has given rise to the development of better pumping policies to save pumping costs. In this paper we discuss the determination of optimum pumping policies for the water distribution system of the city of Lancaster, Ohio. Dynamic programming is used for optimization.
