Abstract:
This is a new column in Interfaces . Its subject is the practical application of linear programming (LP) in what we rather wistfully call “the real world”: industry, commerce, finance, government, and other institutions. The column will focus on the practice of LP for the analysis of live problems and issues; on how it's done in “the real world.” Its primary audience will be MS/OR practitioners, and (I hope) their clients. I will be treating such topics as model formulation, model management, LP-related software, solution interpretation, specific applications, and sometimes nonapplications.
