Abstract: Originally the opening address to the Canadian Operational Research Society meeting in May 1982, this article criticizes the OR profession for ignoring intractable pieces of problems in their solutions. Tracing OR's problems to its acceptance as “applied mathematics,” the author recommends “triviality” as the solution.
