Abstract: The market for nonswitched, high-rate digital leased lines (also called digital “private line” services) for applications such as data and video is lucrative and growing rapidly; the Bellcore client companies are experiencing acute competition in this area. We developed an operations and network architecture to enable them to compete effectively in this highly competitive market. Its dynamic routing allows fast connection times and more efficient use of network capacity than existing routing methods. A comparison of dynamic routing methods with existing hierarchical methods shows a reduction in network capacity of roughly 14 percent with dynamic routing. Bellcore used these results to support a business analysis for Bellcore client companies, who then chose this architecture as a strategic initiative for implementation in their networks.
