Abstract: In an earlier paper ( INTERFACES , Vol. 3, No. 2 (February 1973), p. 1) I discussed the three levels of the semiotic structure of communication---syntax, semantics and pragmatics. In these next columns I shall discuss each of the levels separately, beginning here with semantics.
