Abstract:
An important goal of the laboratory manager is to promote effective problem solving performance by the scientists and engineers working for him. Whether research is contracted out or conducted in-house, there will always be a wide variety of problems concerning experimental design, relevant variables, and approach adopted. These and other types of problems will arise in the evaluation of proposals, projects, and requests for assistance. The laboratory manager will typically be in a position of having less technical competence in a given area than the researchers he is directing. Despite this, he is responsible for creating an environment which maintains their problem solving behavior at a level high enough to ensure that there is satisfactory progress on the activities that fall within the mission of the laboratory.
