Abstract: El propósito de este artículo es dar a conocer el campo de acción del producto interno bruto (pib) como indicador principal para medir la evolución cuantitativa de la economía. Para ello se ejemplifica con algunas aplicaciones de un análisis macroeconómico a México. A su vez, se señala que el pib no se encuentra diseñado para medir, bienestar y desarrollo. Aunque aporta elementos, es necesario complementarlo con estadísticas sociales que permitan enjuiciar el nivel y calidmad de vida de la población, así como, datos que caractericen el desarrollo que es una categoría mucho más compleja que el crecimiento económico./ The intention of this article is to announce the field of action of the internal brute product (gdp) as principal indicator to measure the quantitative evolution of the economy. For it Mexico is exemplified by some applications of a macroeconomic analysis. In turn, one indicates that the gdp is not designed to measure, well-being and development. Though it contributes elements, it is necessary to complement it with social statistics that allow to judge the level and quality of life of the population, as well as, information that characterize the development that is a category much more complex than the economic growth.
