Abstract: The aggregate performance of a production system depends on the behaviour of incumbent firms, on the entry of new firms and on the exit of the less productive ones. This paper proposes an analysis of business demography by Local Labour System for the period 1999-2005, using also the turnover per employee as a proxy for labour productivity. The enterprises’ performance is analysed both in terms of labour productivity and ability to export. Then, the growth capacity of firms and its impact on the overall performance trends are better qualified breaking down the productivity dynamics by the groups of new-born, ceased and incumbent enterprises, and separating the component of the individual growth (“within” effect) from that due to the reallocation of employment shares (“between”effect). The data used are drawn from Istat, namely from the Business register (Asia) and from Foreign trade statistics.
