Abstract: On the basis of a panel of manufacturing enterprises reconstructed by Istat in the period 2001-2008, this work aims at examining if and to what extent sectoral, regional and dimensional differences affect the performance of Italian enterprises with less than 250 employees. The results obtained seem to indicate an increasingly lower importance of sectoral and territorial variables (localisation and inclusion within industrial districts) in determining enterprises’ performance.
