Abstract: This chapter presents the multi-source data collection strategy that has been developed at the Italian National Institute of Statistics since 2004 for the EU-SILC project with a focus on the integration methodology that has been implemented to build net and gross income target variables. The first part of the paper describes the imputation and correction processes carried out by Istat to obtain the final income variables. The second part of the study explains the complex and innovative methodology devised to setup and use a microsimulation model when multiple integrated data sources are available, a task that goes far beyond the traditional “gross to net” (or “net to gross”) conversion of survey incomes. The results show that combining microsimulations with integrated survey and administrative data definitely enhances data quality.
