AUSTRIAN AGRICULTURE IN THE FOOD VALUE CHAIN

Erika Quendler and Franz Sinabell

Economy & Business Journal, 2017, vol. 11, issue 1, 253-267

Abstract: Food and beverage are predominantly, but not exclusively, agricultural products. To a large extent – except in the case of final consumption by the farm family or direct marketing – goods are made ready for consumption through the cooperation of numerous actors in the food value chain. This paper offers insights on the (i) importance of agriculture for food production and (ii) its position in the value chain. The paper is based on official statistical data (Economic Accounts for Agriculture, Farm structure survey, National Accounts and Structural business statistics). Using these findings, the paper draws conclusions on areas necessary for further research.
