Children's school enrollment and time at work in the Philippines

Abstract: This analysis focuses on the determinants of school enrollment and work activities of children aged 7 to 17 in the Philippines. We move beyond dichotomous measures of work to consider the amount of time children devote to work, both market work and home production. The questions of whether trade-offs exist between children's work and schooling and, if so, under what circumstances, can be more fully answered by considering the amount of time that children work. Only a few empirical studies of children's schooling and work have incorporated a time dimension, at least in part because of the demanding data requirements. The results provide considerable evidence of behavioral influences on children's time allocation that go beyond those captured when only examining participation in alternative activities.
