Abstract:
The process of globalization and economic liberalization opened up several opportunities in agricultural sector, especially in the Indian seed sector. The opportunities were in the form of increase in the distribution of quality seeds, improvement in seed replacement rate and reduction in the requirement- supply gap for quality seeds. Liberalization also enabled augmentation of foreign investment and partnership programs in seed sector promoting private participation. Due to liberalization, the information on contractual commitments was available for wider acceptance and alliances with domestic firms. Multinational seed firms are participating as active competitors in the seed markets in India. Currently, there are more than 150 companies operating in India with 1/3rd have collaborative linkage with global partners. This study addresses the impact of liberalization on the economic role of the domestic seed sector and their implications for the use of biotechnology and for achieving food security
