Abstract: According to the statistical study of economic time series there is no empirical evidence that differences between EC economies are diminishing. The study indicates no significant tendency of convergence. An economic study based on historical data and a simple formula reflecting the development of public debts shows that only a few EC member countries will fulfill the convergence criteria of the Maastricht Treaty in a foreseeable timespan.
